Why a Pet?
|
|
There are volumes written about why we should have a pet in our lives. The most important reason is that it gives unconditional love to its owner. Children learn amazing life lessons from having a pet. They learn how to care for another living thing. They learn the responsibilities of feeding, cleaning and grooming. They learn the life lessons of a living creature, from birth to death.
Families too can gain so much from owning pets. Pets can be a joy and can add another dimension to family life. Ownership of birds, small animals, and reptiles foster common interests. Siblings have interests to share and talk about. The hobby of aquarium keeping is often shared by parents and children throughout generations.
Seniors can experience so much value in owning a pet. The pet represents the reason to get up and do something. Something to care for and to love, and that gives love. A pet is something that is always happy to see you and listens, but never talks back.

When choosing a pet, remember you are taking on the responsibility for that pet for its lifetime. There should be an alternate plan in place if you can not take care of it for some unknown reason. If you are getting a pet make sure the whole family is in agreement with you keeping this pet in the house. If a family pet is chosen, like a dog or cat, make sure everyone is willing to share the responsibilities.
Reality is sometimes different than what our expectations or perceptions are. We expect the puppy to be trained to do what we ask of it when it comes home. The problem is the puppy does not understand what is expected. It also gets different expectations from different family members. We perceive the parrot will sit in its cage and talk to us as we pass by. The parrot perceives he wants to come out of the cage and play with us, and wants to talk to us in his language. These opposing views between pets and people can make pet ownership unpleasant. NEVER buy a pet for someone until you know they are ready to commit to the responsibility of ownership.
